At its Fifteenth Session held in 2000, the Governing Board of IRCICA recommended that the third group of awards, to be distributed on the occasion of the Twentieth Anniversary (2000) of the Centre, be presented to the following scholars: Prof. Dr. Syed Naquib Al-Attas (Malaysia), Chairman of the International Institute of Islamic Thought, Malaysia; Prof. Iraj Afshar (Iran), specialist of Islamic history, library science and Islamic manuscripts; Prof. Dr. William Graham (USA), professor of history of religion and Islamic Studies, Harvard University; and Prof. Dr. Yusuf Ibish (Lebanon), Professor of Islamic history and political studies.

On the occasion of IRCICA’s twentieth anniversary, and at the recommendation of IRCICA’s Governing Board, an IRCICA Award for Patronage in the Preservation of Cultural Heritage and Promotion of Scholarship was established, to be presented together with the above awards. Thus in 2000, this award was presented to the following four personalities, in recognition of the patronage and support they extended to the promotion of culture, learning and scholarship and the protection and preservation of Islamic cultural heritage: His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammad Al Qassimi, Ruler of Sharjah and member of the Supreme Council of the United Arab Emirates; His Excellency Sheikh Ahmed Zaki Yamani, Founder and Chairman of Al-Furqan Islamic Heritage Foundation, London; Her Highness Sheikha Hussa Al-Sabah Al-Salim Al-Sabah, Director of Dar al-Athar al-Islamiya (National Museum), Kuwait, and, late Hakeem Abdul Hameed, Founder and Chairman of Hamdard University and Hamdard Foundation, India, as a posthumous tribute to his esteemed memory. The related ceremony, for the presentation of the third group of the IRCICA Award for Excellence in Research and the first group of the IRCICA Award for Patronage in the Preservation of Cultural Heritage and Promotion of Scholarship was held on 25 October 2000, within the framework of Sixteenth Session of the OIC’s Standing Committee for Economic and Commercial Cooperation (COMCEC).
