SPONSORED BY THE ABU DHABI CULTURE AND HERITAGE AUTHORITY The results of the Eighth International Calligraphy Competition, organised by IRCICA and sponsored by the Abu Dhabi Culture and Heritage Authority, have been announced in Abu Dhabi and Istanbul on 15 April 2010.

Mohammad Ghosheh, The Islamic Endowments of Jerusalem, preface by Dr. Halit Eren, 2 vols., IRCICA, 2009

This major book by Prof. Ghosheh on the Islamic waqfs (endowments) of Jerusalem is the largest documentary work on the subject. It contains three main chapters: Chapter I deals with the waqfs of the Ayyubid period, specifically 36 Ayyubid waqfs.

OIC Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture – IRCICA (Istanbul, Turkey) and the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts-MANU (Skopje, Macedonia) are jointly organizing the fourth international congress on the theme “Islamic Civilisation in the Balkans”, to be held under the patronage of H.E. IRCICA Hosts the UN-OIC General Meeting on Cooperation Istanbul, IRCICA Headquarters, 28-29 June and 1st July 2010-06-30

I. Introduction Pursuant to General Assembly resolutions 50/17 of 28 November 1995 and 63/114 of 26 February 2009, the General Meeting on Cooperation between the Secretariats of the United Nations (UN) and the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) and their specialized organizations and agencies took place on the premises of Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA) in Istanbul between June-1 July 2010. The agenda, programme of work and the list of participants are attached as Annexes I, II, and III. Before the opening of the meeting, H.E. Mr. B. Lynn Pascoe, Under-Secretary General for Political Affairs of the United Nations visited Dr. Halit Eren, Director General, in his office in the headquarters of IRCICA. Dr. Eren briefed him on the activities of IRCICA.

Conference on “Astronomers in Islam and their contribution to world history of science” held at IRCICA

In cooperation with the Metropolitan Municipality of Istanbul, a conference on “Astronomers in Islam and their contribution to world history of science” was organised on 7-8 May 2010 at IRCICA. The Secretary General of the OIC Prof. Ekmeleddin İhsnaoğlu and the Metropolitan Mayor of Istanbul Arch. Dr. Kadir Topbaş were present at the opening ceremony at Çit Qasr, Yıldız Palace.

Mr. Jorge Sampaio, the High Representative of the UN Alliance of Civilisations, visited IRCICA (26 April 2010)

IRCICA was honoured to receive on its premises Mr. Jorge Sampaio, the High Representative of the UN Alliance of Civilisations (AoC), accompanied by Ms. Helena Barroco, Special Adviser, on 26 April, during the period of Mr. Sampaio’s official visit to Turkey.

Exhibition of Historical Photographs of Mecca and Medina

More than 100 photographs of the cities of Mecca and Medina were displayed at “The Two Holy Mosques Photograph Exhibition” organised by IRCICA and the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The exhibition was opened in Jeddah on 10 February 2010, in the old Customs building which is used today as a museum. The exhibition was opened for a period of two months and to travel to other cities in the Kingdom.

Honourable rectors, governors, distinguished participants and colleagues, It is a great pleasure to welcome you at IRCICA to launch the 2010 annual meeting of the Al-Quds/Jerusalem ten-year program. We are honoured by the presence at this opening, of four rectors of universities in Turkey, Professor İsmail Yüksek, Rector of Yıldız Technical University, Professor Azmi Özcan, Rector of Bilecik University, Professor Niyazi Eruslu, Rector of Yalova University, Professor Mustafa Aykaç, Rector of Kırklareli University. BULGARIAN MUSLIM COMMUNITY LEADERS’ VISIT TO IRCICA

On 2 December 2009, Dr. Mustafa Hacı who was re-elected Chief Mufti of the Bulgarian Muslims and Mr. Şaban Ali who was elected Chairman of High Islamic Shura at the National Congress that convened on 31 October 2009 in Sofia, paid a visit to Dr Halit Eren, Director General of IRCICA.

IRCICA’s Governing Board session opened with the Message of President Abdoulaye Wade, President of Senegal, Chairman of the 11th Islamic Summit and Chairman of the COMIAC

The 24th annual Session of the Governing Board of IRCICA was opened with a ceremony held on Sunday 8 November 2009 at the Centre’s headquartes in Yıldız Palace. The opening ceremony was held in the presence of President Malal Bacai Sanha, President of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, as guest of honour.
