International Symposium on “Works on Arabic Language, Rhetoric, and Literature in the 8th/14th Century”

Organized by Istanbul Medeniyet University, Marmara University, IRCICA, and the Islamic Research Center (ISAM), the International Symposium on ” Works on Arabic Language, Rhetoric, and Literature in the 8th/14th Century” was held on 6-7 December 2024 at Marmara University Faculty of Theology. The symposium was opened with the speeches of Istanbul Medeniyet University Vice Rector Fatih Sarıoğlu, ISAM President Prof. Dr. Mürteza Bedir, IRCICA Head of Research and Publications Prof. Dr. Cengiz Tomar, and the Organizing Committee Chair at Marmara University, Prof. Dr. Şükran Fazlıoğlu. The symposium emphasized the role of Arabic language and literature in cultural interactions and its contributions to world cultural heritage. Studies were presented by specialists about Arabic linguistic and literary activities in the 14th century, a period when all sciences reached their peak in the Islamic world; leading figures, works, and contributions of the period in the fields of Arabic language, linguistics, and literature, were emphasized.

Explaining the importance that IRCICA attaches to the symposium theme within the framework of its studies on the history of Islamic culture, Prof. Dr. Cengiz Tomar stated that the period of history under review represents a period of brilliant achievements expressed and produced in Arabic in all fields including religious sciences, natural sciences, philosophy, poetry, literature, and calligraphy. The symposium is planned to continue as a series to focus on the subsequent centuries.
