The 15th Islamic Summit Conference of Heads of State and Government of the OIC Member States was held in Banjul, The Gambia, on 4-5 May 2024. The theme of the Summit Conference was “Enhancing Unity and Solidarity Through Dialogue for Sustainable Development”.
IRCICA Director General Prof. Mahmud Erol Kılıç and Assistant Director General Prof. Aboubacar Abdullah Senghore participated in the Summit conference. They had contacts and meetings with delegations of the Member States and OIC institutions.
The Summit Conference was addressed by the President of The Gambia, H.E. Adama Barrow, in the opening and the Closing Sessions. In his closing speech, President Barrow said that the 15th Summit marks a fresh start for The Gambia to engage with Member States and relevant stakeholders to promote peace, justice, and continuous dialogue within the Muslim world and beyond. He urged all Member States to cooperate and accompany The Gambia during its three-year tenure as Chair of the 15th Islamic Summit in order to realize the common ideals and take concrete steps to advance the socio-economic status of the Ummah.
The Summit adopted “Banjul Declaration” in which heads of OIC Member States Affirm their solidarity in confronting the humanitarian catastrophe befalling Gaza Strip and its people due to the Israeli aggression for more than six months without respect for the most basic moral and humanitarian values and called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire and cessation of the all-out aggression against the Palestinian people in Gaza. The Declaration also reaffirmed the need to enable the Palestinian people to realize their legitimate national rights, as recognized by the international community, including through its recognition of the fully sovereign State of Palestine within on the 1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Shareef as its capital.
The Heads of State and Government of OIC Member States reiterated the importance of resorting to dialogue and mediation for peaceful settlement of disputes and stressed the importance of strengthening preventive diplomacy in order to contribute to achieving peace, saving lives and resources as well as attaining sustainable development.
The Islamic Summit also issued a comprehensive final communique addressing various political, economic, humanitarian, cultural, social, and media issues concerning the OIC Member States.
