Türkiye Publishing Summit on “Opportunities and Challenges in Publishing in the 21st Century” was organized by the Directorate of Communications of the Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye on 14-15 February 2025 and held at Rami Library in Istanbul. Prof. Cengiz Tomar, IRCICA’s Chief Advisor and Head of Research and Publications, gave a comprehensive address during the session titled “Publishing as a Cultural Diplomacy Tool”. Prof. Tomar emphasized the cultural and civilizational dimension of publishing, which is indispensable for all communities to maintain their respective roles and places in global culture and civilization and at the same time, voice their causes and concerns. At the same time, an important challenge of publishing in the 21st century is to keep pace with modern communication technology by using the new media while at the same time continuing to use classical printing techniques. Prof. Tomar underlined that publishing through electronic media is indispensable for access to global audiences, especially to reach younger generations. IRCICA makes efforts in this field by establishing digital platforms, such as the “Al-Quds Digital Humanities” project that aims to render its documentary materials and research results globally accessible, and the electronic versions of its printed publications in various fields.
The other sessions of the Summit were titled “The Future of Global Publishing: Hegemony, Ethics and New Narratives”, “The Digitalization of Publishing and the Future of Reading Culture”, “From Bâbıâli to the Present: The Evolution of Türkiye’s Publishing Industry in Türkiye”, “Past, Present, and Future of Public Sector Publishing”, “Writing for the Children of the 21st Century: New Trends in Children’s Publishing”, “Crossing Borders in Publishing: Accessible Publishing”, “The Industry of Book at the Centre of Digital Transformation” and “The Legacy of Publishing in Türkiye: A Session of Testimonies.”
