IRCICA, in cooperation with Istanbul University and Hâfız-ı Şîrâzî Iranian Research Centre of Medeniyet University, organizes on Friday, 9 June 2023, a Panel titled “A Distinguished Scholar of Oriental Studies: Prof. Ahmed Ateş”. The Panel will be opened at 2 p.m. in the conference hall at IRCICA’s General Directorate building; following the opening addresses, a documentary film titled “Prof. Ahmed Ateş in the Eyes of His Students” will be shown, Prof. Ateş’s life and works, as well as the Ahmed Ateş Book Collection preserved at IRCICA, will be introduced to the audience. The Panel, to be accompanied by an exhibition of the photographs and the books of Prof. Ahmed Ateş, will continue with presentations of papers highlighting his contributions to Arabic, Persian and Turkish literary studies and Oriental studies in general. The program will end with a conclusion session to begin at 4.45 p.m.
Born in 1917, Ahmed Ateş studied in the Department of Turkish Language and Literature of Istanbul University from 1935-39 and started to work as Hellmut Ritter’s assistant in the Chair of Arabic and Persian Philology in 1939. He studied with leading professors of his time; he became Associate Professor in 1943 and Professor in 1953. Prof. Ateş represented Türkiye at many international conferences; the activities of the academic units he chaired won recognition in both the Eastern and the Western academic circles concerned. Prof. Ateş contributed remarkably to the advancement of Oriental Studies in Türkiye, a field that never equaled the same splendor again. Prof. Ateş died on 20 October 1966. His collection of books in different languages is preserved at IRCICA Library.
