IRCICA’s scholarly and artistic publication on Islamic calligraphy gives the history of this art starting from the origins of the Arabic script until the last great artists of the Ottoman school of calligraphy. It is printed on high quality paper and contains 192 colour plates of calligraphy by artists from the Muslim world from the first century Hijra to the present time with information about each work and its calligrapher.
The book was published in English, Arabic, Japanese, Malay, and Turkish editions during the 1990s. The text written in Turkish by Nihat Cetin and Uğur Derman was translated into Arabic at IRCICA; the book was translated into Japanese by Mr. Kouichi Honda and published by Heibonsha Limited, Tokyo, in 1996; its English translation by Mr. Mohamed Zakariya and Mr. Mohamed Asfour was published in 1998; based on this edition, the Malay translation was prepared and published by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, Kuala Lumpur, in 2000.
