This book resulted from the international seminar on “Traditional Carpets and Kilims in the Muslim World: Past, Present & Future Prospects for Developing this Heritage with the Continuous Changes in the Market, Design, Quality and Applied Techniques” which was organized by IRCICA and the Handicrafts National Agency (ONA) of the Ministry of Tourism, Handicrafts and Leisure of Tunisia with the cooperation of Mashareq International Establishment, Jeddah, and the participation of the International Centre for the Promotion of Crafts (CIPA), Fez. The Seminar was organized in Tunis, on 19-25 November 1999. 70 papers were presented by experts from 38 countries and organizations. A rich exhibition accompanied the seminar.
The book contains images of traditional carpets and kilims (rugs) sampled from among the works displayed by weavers from Algeria, Azerbaijan, Burkina Faso, Egypt, India, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Iran, Kuwait, Malaysia, Morocco, Pakistan, Palestine, Qatar, South Africa, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, Uganda, U.S.A.- Indian Navajo Carpets, Uzbekistan, Venezuela, Yemen. Explanatory texts are provided on the techniques, materials, marketing and other issues concerning the traditional carpet-weaving sector.
