This book contains the papers of the First International Congress on Islamic Archaeology which was organized by IRCICA on its premises in Yıldız Palace in 2005. It was a large-scale congress held under the patronage of H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of Türkiye, then Prime Minister, and attended by specialists from around the world working on the archeology of different region and periods of the Muslim world. The congress aimed at promoting studies on “Islamic Archaeology” as a distinct period and subject within the discipline. The book begins with the texts of the addresses delivered at the opening ceremony including those of the Prime Minister, and the Secretary General of the OIC Prof. Ekmeleddin İhsanoğlu. The presentations at the congress are grouped in two parts, titled “On-Site Research and Excavations” and “Research, perspectives in Islamic archaeology”. The papers deal with the state and the results of research and excavations in different countries and regions or communicate the outcomes of studies on particular archaeological sites dating from different periods. At the end of the book is an outline of the participants’ recommendations for the development of studies in this field. The greatest part of the book is in English.
