The Symposium on “Islamic Civilization in South Asia” was co-organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh and IRCICA in association with Dhaka University and held in Dhaka on 16- 18 November 2008. The symposium was an excellent occasion to appraise and further enrich the studies focusing on the history and heritage of Islamic culture and civilization in South Asia. Research papers were presented on collections of Islamic religious and scientific manuscripts and printed works, including copies and translations of the Holy Quran; architectural inscriptions; artworks and archeological materials. The evolution of Urdu as a language of learning and literature over the centuries was explored. The book contains 17 papers in the English language. The majority address topics relating to the history of Islam in the region, language, art and architecture.
