This book contains the proceedings of IRCICA’s first international symposium on Islamic Civilization in Volga-Ural Region, held in Kazan, Tatarstan, Russian Federation, on 8-11 June 2001. The symposium was held under the patronage of the First President of Tatarstan H.E. Mintimer Shaimiev, in the Russian Federation. The cooperating institutions were the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences (Kazan), the State University of Kazan, the Oriental Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow), the Union of Orientalists of the Russian Federation (St. Petersburg) and IRCICA. 37 papers were presented by participants from around the world. The papers are published in the language in which they were presented, i.e. English, Russian and Turkish, with summaries in English.
