This is the collection of 35 research papers presented during IRCICA’s Second International Symposium on Islamic Civilization in Volga-Ural Region, held in Kazan, Tatarstan (Russian Federation) on 24-26 June 2005. The symposium was organized by a high-level committee composed of governmental and academic representatives in the Russian Federation and in Tatarstan, with IRCICA’s cooperation. It was placed within the framework of the millennium commemoration of Kazan City. The book’s elaborate list of contents includes such topics as: the written sources forming the Volga-Ural intellectual heritage; religion, ethno-cultural identity; ideological movements; high culture; arts and architecture; multi-cultural influences and the Islamic component in the formation of these processes. The papers are published in their original languages – Russian, English or Turkish.
