A collection of articles on the social and cultural environment surrounding scientific activity in European and Islamic contexts during the 16th and 17th centuries and its effects on the development of early modern science. Particular attention is devoted to the effects of religious values, analyzed on the basis of examples. Some articles focus on the perspectives and methodology to be adopted in evaluating the relationship between science and religion in different contexts. Most of the articles were presented at the workshop on the theme “Science and Human Values” organised by the European Science Foundation in cooperation with IRCICA and the Turkish Society for History of Science and held at IRCICA on 6-7 October 2001. The workshop was co-chaired by Prof. Ekmeleddin İhsanoğlu and Prof. John Hedley Brooke, who later also cooperated in editing the publication for IRCICA.
